HELP FOR THE WAR WIDOWS IN THAGAVELAUTHAPURAM
A request was made by the Rural Development Society(RDS) Of Thangavelauthapuram in the Amparai District to the Hindu Council Of Sri Lanka(HCSL) to help the war widows who have resettled in Thangavelauthapuram(TVPM) which is a remote village about 20 Km. from Thirukovil a town. TVPM is surrounded by paddy fields and is close to the forest. The people in this area have not been provided with basic facilities like housing, water , sanitation, electricity. Further they have been sometimes attacked by elephants from nearby forest.
It was therefore decided to help the widows by providing them with materials required for their livelihood activities such as agricultural implements and goats for rearing.
With the assistance of Gramasevaka and the officials of the RDS most deserving 25 widowed families were selected for supplying them with materials mentioned above for their livelihood .Arrangements were made with Officials of Thirunavukarasu Nayanar Kurukulam (TNK) to purchase all the items required locally in coordination with RDS Officials and Gramasevaka. The President and Assistant Secretary (Mr.Velautham) of HCSL arrived in Thirukovil on the morning of 15th December 2013 and thereafter proceeded to TVPM.
For this event President and Secretary of TNK, RDS Officials, Gramasevaka and two Officers from the Army were present at the Gramasevaka’s Office along with the widows. After religious ceremony and speeches by relevant Officials the items- mamotty, large knives, bucket, LED torch light and a goat were given to each of the 25 widows. Four water pumps bought with accessories for cultivation of subsidiary food crops were given in charge of the Gramasevaka for him to provide them as and when a request is made by the widows for irrigation.
