LIVELYHOOD  SUPPORT FOR WOMEN AFFECTED BY WAR.

Hindu Council Of Sri Lanka( HCSL) has formed women’s forum named as MANGAIYAR MANRAM(MM) in certain villages of Batticaloa  District. These women are from the war affected families who have lost their bread winner or are from the poor segment.  These women have formed groups of 20 members  and are contributing Rs.10/- weekly into a savings account  and from these savings they have started  cottage industries like grinding chili powder, rice flower for sale after packing, making food items such as pittu, string hoppers, and thosai  for supplying  break fast and dinner, home gardening, poultry farming, and sewing garments for sale. In order to maintain these groups and encourage them to work as groups, HCSL has employed a Trainer Mrs. Seevaratnam for whom HCSL is paying Rs.15,000/-- monthly  as travelling allowance.

At present MMs have been formed in  Swiss Kiramam, Kumaraveliyar Kiramam, Iruthayapuram and Gnanasooriyam Square. Earlier  grinding of chili powder and rice flower was done at private grinding mills  and therefore  the cost of production was high. Therefore it was proposed to buy grinding  machines and 5 sewing machines  and supply to  all the groups. Accordingly  the cost of purchase of the machines and installation and other  charges was Rs280,000/-.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       The President, Vice President and Treasurer of HCSL visited Batticaloa on the 22nd October 2011 and handed over the grinding machines to the MMs mentioned above.  They were told that SCOT-UK  had funded partly for this project. By first week of Decebmber the machines have been installed and are now operational. In addition each group has been given a sewing machine for those members who are involved in sewing garments for orders and also for sale.

We take this opportunity to thank SCOT-UK for having funded this project also and hope they will continue to give further assistance in the future too  to help our community, particularly those who were affected by the war that was concluded in May 2009.
