MANGAIYAR MANRAM-MULLAITIVU

MANGAIYAR MANRAMS IN MULLAITIVU.

On 8th of March 2014 it was decided by the executive committee of the Hindu Council Of Sri Lanka(HCSL) to supply agricultural and other implements for the livelihood activities of women headed families in Mullaitivu so that they could earn a living without outside help. These women are widows resulting from the war that ended in May 2009.

Groups of 20 women in each were formed, called Mangaiyar Manrams and they contribute weekly  a certain sum which is deposited into a savings account and then loans are granted to start a cottage industry, home gardening, or poultry farming.

In keeping with the decision to support these Manrams, President, Treasurer and an Executive Member(after prior arrangements made) visited Mullaitivu on 31st May 2014.

Three groups were invited to be presnt at Puthukudiuruppu Divisional Secretariat's Auditorium and they were addressed by the President, HCSL Co-ordinator for Mullaitvu and other officials of the Secretariat.Thereafter  15 sewing machines with scissors were given to 15 women,  17 water pumps were given to17 women and 22 women were given 50 chicks each(totaling 1100) for poultry farming.
