MARUTHANKERNYKULAM GMT SCHOOL.
SUPPLY OF STATIONERY & BICYCLES.
On a request by the Principal of Maruthernkernikulam GTM School in Vaharai which is about 60Km from Batticaloa Hindu Council of Sri Lanka (HCSL) decided to supply exercise books, pencils, pen, rulers, instrument boxes and school bags to students of the School numbering 172. In addition bicycles were also included for senior students who have to travel 10 to 15Km.
Vaharai is a very remote area where life is very difficult and affected very badly during the war. Population is sparse and no transport facilities are available. Main occupation of the people are collecting honey, hunting for meat, and fishing in fresh water ponds. It is sad to say that there is no vegetable cultivation. Thus the people have to eat rice and fish only. Maruthankernikulam is about 12 Km from the main road to Trincomalee and one has to travel through gravel road to reach the School.
Though power lines are available for supply of electricity the School does not have power supply since they could not find Rs.22,000.00 to obtain the connection from Ceylon Electriciy Board. The principal said that though computers are available, students could not make use of them because of no electricity. Therefore HCSL decided to pay connecting charges to C.E.B.
The President and two members of HCSL together with two students from University Of Colombo, arrived in Batticaloa on 20th July 2012 and thereafter proceeded to Maruthankernikulam GTM School along with the stationery, school bags and bicycles. The students were assembled in a small hall for distribution of the items mentioned above.
For this event Kalkudah Zonal Director of Education Mrs. Subah Chakravarthi and Vaharai Education Officers were also present. After short speeches by Mrs.Chakravarthi, The principal, Batticaloa Co-ordinator of HCSL and the President of HCSL, distribution of the bicycles to 20 selected students commenced. Thereafter the school bags and exercise books and instrument boxes were given to them. Instrument boxes were given only for students of year 6 to year 11. The President submitted the deposit slip for Rs.22,000.00 deposited in to the School Develepment Account to the Principal for the C.E.B. connection charges.
In addition collection of books for the school library and past question papers for GCE ordinary level students were handed over to the Principal.
