LIVELYHOOD SUPPORT FOR WAR AFFECTED FAMILIES.
The women in the North are increasingly becoming bread winners who have to support their families. The causes for this change are due to the war- members of the families being killed ,maimed, disappearing or being in military custody.
Hindu Council Of Sri Lanka(HCSL) has met some of the affected persons and during the conversations with them we realized that though offers of livelihood projects were made by other organizations none have come back to implement any one. They feel cheated and neglected.
Therefore HCSL decided to provide livelihood materials for crop cultivation and animal husbandry and ensure the market for these products. This process being a continuous will generate income sufficient for their livelihood. Thus we supplied selected families with agricultural implements, accessories, chicks and other necessities for poultry farming. The Grama Sevaka of Puthumurippu in Kilinochchi District selected 20 war affected families on our request. After having purchased the required stock, President, Vice President and Treasurer travelled to Kilinochchi and lodged at Mahadeva Ashram on 18th September 2011.
The families assembled at the Ashram by 9.00 A.M. and thereafter they were addressed by the President, Vice President, Chief Secretary, Northern Province and the Grama Sevaka. Thereafter the families were requested to assemble at the branch office of Mahadeva Ashram in Puthukudiyiruppu as it was convenient for them to carry the items to their homes nearby.
The items that were distributed to the families present were, mammoty, rake, spade, water cans, seeds, fertiliser, chicks, sprayer, buckets, gloves, vaccination &mash. Three water pumps purchased were lodged at the Ashram, to be shared by the families.
The total cost of the project was Rs.394,000/-.
We wish to thank the donors for this small project and hope they will continue to support in the future too.
