RECONSTRUCTION & REPAIRS OF WELLS
Many of the wells in Puthumurippu in Kilinochchi District belonging to war widows are without any retaining walls from the bottom. These are actually earth excavated until water is found at the bottom like a deep pond. On rainy days the wells become muddy and the water cannot be used for drinking. Therefore the widows have to get drinking water from elswhere. The water from the wells dug out are used only for home gardening.
Therefore on a request by some of the widows, Hindu Council Of Sri Lanka(HCSL) decided to help selected 5 widows to construct circular concrete walls right from the bottom and raise it up to 4 feet above the ground level with a concrete platform on which these widows can draw their water for drinking, cooking and irrigation for home gardening which could generate income for their livelihood.
Five such wells were reconstructed at an average cost of about Rs200,000/- per well. The widows also participated in construction process in order to keep the cost of construction to a minimum.
We do thank all those well wishers and Tamil Engineers Foundation for funding this project and making it a success.
