In May 2016 there was heavy rains in most parts of the country and thousands of people were displaced losing there belongings and several houses were damaged. One such area was Navakelanypura in Wellampitya in Colombo District. In this small village people of all communities are living together.
There is a Pillaiyar Temple which is managed by Sivanesa Kurukkal and his wife is the head of the Mangaiyar Manrams formed an year earlier. At her request it was decided to supply 2 Kg. of rice to all the families in this locality. Accordingly on 12th of June 2016 2Kg. of rice were given to each of the families of all communities numbering about one thousand.
